10/29/24: Understanding and Action

In one of today's updates, GIS trailblazer and ESRI founder Jack Dangermond says, "Understanding precedes action. We're in the business of creating understanding, which leads to better planning, decision-making, and action." (Mongabay: 50 years of geographic insight: In interview with Jack Dangermond on Esri’s journey and the future of GIS)

Information and understanding feel a little different, and taking action still requires capacity and skill. But I hope that the following information will be useful to you in radically advancing better planning, decision-making, and action.

As always, we've scanned for updates from over 1000 green tech and sustainability orientations, gathering their learnings, analyzing and summarizing them, in order to help advance your work. If you subscribe by email, you’ll find three updates our system selected just for you.

Ok, let's get into it.

Visual of the Day

From More krill fishing and no new protected areas for Antarctic seas after latest talks (Mongabay). Despite a 2009 international agreement to protect wildlife in the Arctic, which is heating up faster than almost any other part of the world, negotiations are at a standstill. China and Russia vetoed expansion of new protected areas and pushed for expanded krill fishing access in meetings this month.

I'm sharing this image in part to highlight the specificity of the region in question; I think it helps make it feel all the more real to see some of its parts.
