What are the requirements for information to be absorbed, usable, actionable? I'm betting on personal relevance being a key one, but it's surely not the only one. I think examples of how to take action with information is another.
To that end, I want to share how I made use of one of the recommendations I got from my Earth Catalyst newsletter yesterday. Perhaps it will be helpful to you in making use of your recommendations offered here.
I was recommended the article How language barriers influence global climate literacy because its "data-driven analysis of systemic barriers aligns with your interests in consulting and radical social change through information access." True!
In particular what I was struck by when I read the article was the discussion of English being not only a minority language in the world, though totally dominant in climate research and publishing, but how it's really the language of the elites in many former colonies. That class consciousness was a great reminder that I can bring to some of my work, for example our collaboration with the Veterans for Peace Climate & Militarism Project to help get their recent research & presentation on the ecological impacts of Israel's horrific destruction in Gaza out to a wider audience. I want to remember to bring class consciousness to the many things I keep in mind when doing that work. Through the recommended article I also discovered the group Climate Cardinals, a network of youth volunteers who translate climate information from English to other languages. I've added them to our list of sources to track here.
So from the recommended article about someone else's work, I was able to enrich and reinforce my list of considerations that I bring into the work I'm doing - and discover a new group to connect with in case our work overlaps in the future.
That's how I made yesterday's recommendations actionable for me.
If you want to see the table of contents and full collection of today’s updates, I've posted it all on the blog.
Ok, let's do it.
