10/9/24 - We Must Change Now

Getting short term action aligned with long term needs is a fundamental challenge. Seth Godin says the key is telling a story that's both important in the long term and urgent in the short term, that combination will get people to change.

What if action now, hitting the world's climate goals for 2035, could improve our odds of keeping warming under 2C in 2100 from a 7% chance to a 68% chance? That's the conclusion of analyst firm Rhodium Group today (see Image of the day below). 2100 is when the beautiful babies today in my family will see their grandchildren be born.

Maybe it's not about what we need to do, though, as much as how we need to be now. 10% of you subscribed to Earth Catalyst emails are getting personal recommendations today for an article brilliantly titled "How writing a 'to-be list' rather than a 'to-do list' could be your first step to creating lasting systems change." I thought I'd highlight it for everyone else here too!

Ok, let's be ever more effective together today, shall we?

Image of the Day: Short Term Goals Are Key

“We now project likely temp. increases of 2.2-3.2°C by 2100, 2.7°C on avg, absent a meaningful acceleration of policy or technology innovation. However, this means that if current trends continue, we find a less than 7% chance of keeping global temp increases below 2°C.” From the Rhodium Climate Outlook 2024.  Rhodium is a well-respected analyst firm that does probabilistic analysis, including incorporating what it calls its Emerging Climate Technology Framework. See for example Trellis’s coverage last Summer of Rhodium’s forecasts regarding the IRA’s impacts 100 years from now. Or David Roberts’ Volts conversation with Trevor Houser of the Rhodium Group this Spring (I’ll listen to that next, I’m sure it’s super informative).

All of this is to say that Rhodium concludes our current rate of change needs to be accelerated dramatically, even accounting for current exponential change.

IF we can hit 2035 and 2070 goals, the odds of 2100 being less disastrous improve dramatically: "If countries meet their current near- and long-term emissions commitments, it increases the odds of keeping global mean temperature rise below 2°C from less than 7% to 68%.." Let's go!!

Quote of the Day: Immediate Transformative Changes Needed Now

“Immediate, transformative policy changes are now necessary if we are to avoid the worst effects of climate change.

“Climate change is already here. But it could get much, much worse. By slashing emissions, boosting natural climate solutions and working towards climate justice, the global community can still fend off the worst version of our future.” From Thomas Newsome (University of Sydney) and William Ripple (Oregon State University) in The Conversation, Unprecedented peril: disaster lies ahead as we track towards 2.7°C of warming this century  (Yup, that’s the same number Rhodium above predicts.)
