I turned 48 recently and have been thinking about how that could be understood as concluding my first 30 years of adulthood. Fate willing, I'll now have a second 30 years of adulthood to deploy the lessons and resources of the first period in this second half. And I'll keep learning stuff.
A new study covered in Mongabay yesterday concludes that across all kinds of ecosystems, older animals (and plants) provide critical ecological benefits through more skilled reproduction, habitat knowledge, and social stability, warranting stronger conservation focus on protecting older individuals.
In humans too, the sharing of wisdom from one generation to the next is a fundamental opportunity for change. For example, the organization Meli Bees published a profile yesterday of a man named Arukapé Suruí Aikewara who is teaching youth in the Amazon about ancestral ways of making a living and creating culture, including agroforestry and beekeeping, as a climate adaptation strategy. He's not just thinking of his own neck of the woods either: “Our greatest dream is to transform our territory into a model of sustainable living and inspire other communities,” he says.
There's been a lot of talk since the US election about the authoritarian culture-making machine that seems to have played such a big role in the outcome. As part of that conversation, the brilliant communications strategist Anat Shenker-Osorio shared research she did years ago contrasting the discourse of human rights activists, which offers "a litany of harms, laws, demands", and right wing culture, which she said "intentionally creates belonging - tells people, you have a place here."
I offer this morning the idea that sharing hard earned wisdom and experience of sustainable, positive ways to thrive together, from one generation to another, in a way that tells the next generation "you have a place here" - may not just be a great opportunity, it may be absolutely essential.

A transformation in what we study when we study older animals
(Click to view full size.) 30 years ago, scientists around the world were studying the reproductive success of older animals more than anything. Now that's totally switched and the role of animal and plant longevity in ecosystem conservation has risen to the top of the heap of subjects studied in this field.
"Longevity conservation is needed to protect the important ecological roles an ecosystem services provided by old animals." From Loss of Earth’s old, wise, and large animals, in Science, from Charles Darwin University in Australia.
