It's been a hard week. I was glad to hear from several of you who shared your thoughts and feelings in response to yesterday's post-election newsletter.
I spoke with one of you yesterday whom I had the honor of introducing to the concept of antifragility: a type of system where dealing effectively with small disturbances (as opposed to avoiding them), can help the system grow stronger and more able to deal with the inevitable shocks of much larger disturbances. I feel like this is a useful concept right now, in anticipation of working through some hard years ahead.
This is different from resilience (also good, as is allowing yourself to feel your feelings), this is about finding ways to grow stronger in response to hard times.
Some of the key steps in building an antifragile system include
exposing it to minor stressors in order to learn and adapt,
building in redundancy to avoid single points of failure,
decentralizing decision making, and
building slack into the system. Don't optimize everything for 100% intensity, instead build in slack so it can serve as a buffer for spikes of intensity.
This newsletter might be a source of antifragility by introducing us to multiple models to advance our work. Redundancy: if your current model isn't working, here are some others you might try.
Also, this election situation is just plain awful. Let's acknowledge that.
Visual of the Day: Microplastics Make Clouds
"Clouds form when water vapor – an invisible gas in the atmosphere – sticks to tiny floating particles, such as dust, and turns into liquid water droplets or ice crystals. In a newly published study, we show that microplastic particles can have the same effects, producing ice crystals at temperatures 5 to 10 degrees Celsius (9 to 18 degrees Fahrenheit) warmer than droplets without microplastics.
"This suggests that microplastics in the air may affect weather and climate by producing clouds in conditions where they would not form otherwise." -Miriam Freedman, Professor of Chemistry, Penn State and Heidi Busse, PhD Student in Chemistry, Penn State Microplastics promote cloud formation, with likely effects on weather and climate (And for PVC, it gets WORSE with time and sun exposure.)
The largest sources of microplastics pollution are synthetic clothing, rubber from car tires, and the Coca-Cola company, who produce a jaw-dropping quantity of plastic bottles every day, much of which ends up dissolved in the ocean and becoming climate-chaos inducing microplastics in the sky.
